Many believe ABA therapy only works for children, but adults who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder can also benefit from ABA therapy. Of course, the goals being targeted in ABA for adults can differ from children.
For example, goals targeted in ABA for adults can include:
- Living independently
- Finding/Maintaining employment
- Life Skills
- Appropriate interactions with employees
- Setting Doctor appointments
- Meeting new acquaintances
- Chores like cleaning the kitchen, taking the trash out, wiping down surfaces, and even using appropriate cleaning supplies.
Goals targeted for children can include:
- Fine motor skills
- Toilet training
- Functional play
- Turn taking
- Fine motor skills
Since every client is unique, some child target goals can work for adults as well. For example if your 21 year old is low functioning, targeting goals like attending or even functional play would be helpful. Again, it all depends on the client. Some clients can be 19 years old who do not like accepting no, and that is a goal that would be targeted. Some adults may not know their ABC’s or even counting 1-100 and those specific goals would be targeted. Every client is unique, and each intervention would be created for that specific client. It is great to know that ABA for adults can be extremely beneficial and that goals like writing a resume, and independently living is an option. Of course, once the assessment is completed by a qualified clinician, we would know exactly what goal to target whether it is ABA for a child or ABA for adults. It is never too late to benefit from ABA therapy. ABA provides so much exposure to new learning skills and the client would increase their capabilities with a structured ABA schedule.
